I Almost hit a kid today

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

It’s true. I almost hit a kid with my car today.

I was driving down Castle Drive as school was letting out at Cynthia Mann Elementary School. The flashers were flashing and I had slowed down to 20 MPH. As I approached the cross walk in front of the school I’m watching the activity. Kids standing on the sides of the road waiting to cross, some with parents some without. Another kid with a vest and a stop sign is standing there waiting to jump into action. It seems everyone was waiting on the kid with the sign to get things going. Well, he did. Without judging the distance between myself and the crosswalk, this crossing guard starts walking out in front of traffic holding up the sign as if it could stop anything. I was close enough that when he stepped off the curb I started to wonder if he actually intended on stopping traffic. Again, I was close. So close that my brain was figuring out if it was safer to try and stop or if it was safer to keep going. I decided to step on the brakes. Going 20 MPH doesn’t make your tires skid when you hit the brakes, but it does make any loose objects in your car go forward. Loose objects went forward.

I was surprised that he did this and a little angry as well. I let out an “Oh, come on”. My window was cracked and he heard it. So did some of the parents. One in particular started dragging her daughter through the crosswalk. She was giving me this grin as if she relished in my surprised anger. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw one car stopped behind me. There was a gap between that car and the ones still approaching. The little boy needed to shoot for the gap.

My anger at the crossing guard quickly faded when I put everything in perspective. At that point I became angry at the woman in the crosswalk. She is an adult and was standing just a few feet from the crossing guard when he and his sign stepped out into oncoming traffic. She didn’t seem to mind. She said nothing. She ignored it. She acted as if this is the way it is. I would expect an adult to be a bit more responsible and worry about the safety of the children. I thought about stopping and saying something but felt that the current mood I was in would not help any. I didn’t notice any teachers monitoring the little boy. Are these kids monitored? I don’t know. One little girl down the road a bit doing crossing guard duty had an adult with her, but I don’t recall seeing any teacher/adult monitoring this little boy.

The little boy is not at fault even though my initial reaction was towards him. He needs to be watched and corrected if he makes mistakes. I make them and don’t expect perfection from others, but, when a persons well being is on the line, especially a child’s, there should be some oversight.

You don’t have to be a professional writer, actually I prefer you to be an average person with a job and a family and a unique viewpoint on Boise. I’m not looking for people with political or social agendas. I’m just looking for the average person.

Just fill out this form and let me know a bit about yourself and why you are interested. I will get back to you.

Time for a VACATION

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I’m considering taking a vacation. However, I can’t afford it. How about a minivacation. I could probably pull that one off. A minivacation to me is simply taking Thursday and Friday off. Leave on Thur. morning and return on Sunday afternoon.

Where would I go you are asking. Well, I’m a water guy. I’m kinda partial to the coast. Whenever I need to see some waves and seagulls I always visit Bandon.tv. It’s a great website. My last vacation was spent over there. Its a great place to go.

This is where I stayed:

U of I’s new Airplane

Monday, November 16th, 2009

MOSCOW, ID – Horizon Air announced today that they have produced a University of Idaho themed plane. The plane has been designed in the black and gold Vandal color scheme, and features the U of I logo.

U of I plane

Due to the lack of popularity of University of Idaho athletics, Horizon Air’s budget for the production of this plane only allowed for one (1) single piece of standard stock 8.5″ x 11″ Office Depot Ink Jet Printing Paper for the body of the plane, and a very small portion of an HP 75 Ink Jet Color Cartridge for the black and gold painting of the plane.

The plane will be based out of the University of Idaho Kibbie Air Hangar. The plane is expected to transport zero passengers, and was simply constructed by Horizon Air to appease whiny-ass Vandals who feel they “deserve a plane, too”.

Is blogging dead?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Seriously. Is Blogging dead? There are countless blogs out there so the answer is obviously no. But that isn’t really the answer I was looking for. There are millions of blogs. Some blogs were started to give a voice to the author. Some were started to convey information to the reader. Some were started to make money. Of all those started how many no longer do it? How many blogs are sitting there gathering dust. Nobody has posted to it in months or even a year or more?

Sure, blogs are started everyday. how many more of them are abandoned everyday.

This blog will sometimes go for a month without a post. That my friends is a no-no in the blogging world. But, hey, so what. I’m still typing the words now and then. I have nobody relying on this to get them through the day. so, no biggie.

Back to the question. Is Blogging DEAD? I’m gonna stick my neck out and say that if it isn’t dead. It is dying.

If that is the truth. Then what is coming along to replace it? Twitter? I hope not.

Just a thought that crossed my mind. I thought I would throw it out there for some conversation. Let me know what you think.

Whats up with the blogs?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I was slinking around the internet today and ran across a huge list of websites. This one was listed in it as well. I also noticed another domain name with the words ‘Boise’ and ‘blog’ in it. Not fearing competition I decided to do a search of all the domains listed with those two words in them. Their were quite a few. 23 in this list to be exact. I decided to look at most of them to see what they were writing about. The majority covered real estate.

Why are there so many real estate blogs? I know the internet is a good way to get the word out but it seems to me that the real estate marketers are kinda saturating the blog aspect of real estate marketing. Those sites were just the ones with the two words I mentioned earlier. How many other real estate blogs are out there?

A bit of a boring subject, I know. Get over it.

Oh, wanted to throw a shout out to my 3 faithful readers out there… Thanks Mom, Dad, and that crazy person who keeps sending me e-mails, raving about my literary skills.

It’s the economy, Stupid.

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

So. I had been walking around recently with my head screwed on straight. My future looking bright. I had always thought that in my line of work, I would always be needed and I wouldn’t have to worry about the economy having an effect on me. It has had an effect on me but not to the extent I thought it would until yesterday morning.

I found out Monday morning that the company I work for is losing one of its contracts. We still have another, but the one we are losing accounts for about 3/4ths of my income. This isn’t a good sign. However, I’m not one of those whiney SOB’s that think I deserve a job or that I deserve anything but the opportunity to do well.

I’m really kinda playing it by ear and seeing what is going to happen in the next week or two before I start making any plans on whether to stay and hope all works out, or to get out there and start finding another job.

I’ll probably go back to what I had been doing a few years ago to supplement my income. That would be buying junk and turning it around and selling it on ebay. I always made a few extra bucks doing that.

I’ll keep you up to date on what happens.

2008 is almost gone

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

I’m sitting here in my new home fiddling around on the computer and thought I would make a quick entry to keep the search engines happy. They like to keep sites in their database that update periodically. If you let a blog go stagnant the search engines lose interest in it.

Either way… it is snowing like a bastard today. I’ve seen worse as I’m sure many of you have but if you compare the last week to Christmases past, we are having a good snow day.

I need to run some errands. I’m curious if the roads are as bad as I think or if the snow plows have been out and about.

Just Voted

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

I just voted and fully expected to stand in line for an hour or two. I didn’t stand in line for anything. I walked in, registered, got my ballot, voted, turned it in, and then walked out. From the time I left my house to the time I got back home took about 25 minutes.

Nice, I say.

Now go vote.
